The Complete Guide to Eloping or Having an Intimate Wedding in Columbus, Ohio

So you're thinking about skipping the big production and doing something a little more... you. Maybe it's just the two of you and a handful of people who matter most. Maybe it's a backyard ceremony with your grandmother's china and your sister's flower arrangements. Maybe you've been eyeing that gorgeous park pavilion downtown and wondering if it's even possible to get married there.

Good news: it absolutely is. And Columbus, Ohio is honestly one of the most underrated cities in the country for intimate weddings and elopements. Let me walk you through everything — the best spots, the logistics you need to know, and how to make it feel like the most special day of your life without the stress of a 200-person guest list.

Why Intimate Weddings and Elopements Are Having a Moment

Here's something I've noticed after photographing over 100 weddings in Central Ohio since 2012: the couples who seem the most present, the most relaxed, and the most genuinely joyful on their wedding day are almost always the ones with smaller guest lists.

When you're not worrying about 200 people, a six-course dinner, and a seating chart that took three months to plan — you actually get to experience your wedding day. You get to look your person in the eyes during your vows and really mean it, without wondering if Aunt Carol is crying too loud in the third row.

Intimate weddings and elopements aren't the backup plan. For a lot of couples, they're the dream.

The Best Spots for an Intimate Wedding or Elopement in Columbus, Ohio

North Bank Park Pavilion — Downtown Columbus with a Skyline View

If you've ever driven through the Arena District and caught a glimpse of the Scioto River with the Columbus skyline reflected in it, you already know why couples love this spot. North Bank Park Pavilion sits right on that riverfront and it is stunning — floor-to-ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace, and views that make every photo look effortless.

The pavilion accommodates up to 100 guests indoors and another 100 on the outdoor terrace — perfect for an intimate ceremony that still has room for the people you love.

Here's what you need to know about booking it:

North Bank Park Pavilion uses a lottery system for dates more than one year out. Here's how it works:

1. You submit your desired date to the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department before the lottery date (at least 48 hours prior to one year out from your wedding date).

2. If multiple couples want the same date, everyone who submitted goes into the lottery.

3. The lottery is held exactly one year before your desired date.

4. If you win, you'll get a phone call first thing that morning to set up the reservation.

5. If you don't win and you submitted multiple dates, you're automatically entered into the next lottery — so it pays to have a few backup dates in mind.

Pro tip: Sunday weddings are significantly less competitive in the lottery AND tend to cost less overall — especially on the bar tab since guests typically drink less on a Sunday. If you have flexibility in your date, Sunday is your secret weapon.

Inniswood Metro Gardens — Westerville's Hidden Garden Gem

If your vision involves lush greenery, winding garden paths, and a ceremony that feels like you stepped into a storybook — Inniswood in Westerville is your spot. Located just outside Columbus, Inniswood Metro Gardens features over 2,000 species of plants, beautiful fountains, and a Rose Garden that is truly one of the most photogenic spots in Central Ohio.

Here's what makes Inniswood special for intimate weddings:

There is no fee to have a wedding at Inniswood. Ceremonies and wedding photography are held in the Rose Garden area. The park is open to the public, so you'll be sharing the space with other visitors — which actually creates a beautiful, natural atmosphere rather than an overly formal one.

A few things to keep in mind: no decorations, no confetti or flower petals, no amplified sound, and no alcohol. Vehicles stay in the parking lot. Call ahead at 614-895-6216 (Tuesday through Friday) to let them know your plans and avoid any scheduling conflicts with their events.

For an early morning elopement with soft golden light filtering through the gardens? Inniswood is absolutely magical.

Backyard Weddings — More Beautiful Than You Think

Backyard weddings have this reputation for being the budget option, but honestly? Some of my most beautiful and emotional wedding photos have come from someone's backyard. There is something so intimate and personal about getting married in the space where you've had summer cookouts, where your kids have played, where your family has gathered for years.

If you're considering a backyard wedding, here's what to think about for rentals and setup:

Seating and tables: Don't expect your guests to stand or balance plates on their laps. Renting folding chairs and tables is affordable and makes the whole event feel intentional rather than improvised. Many Columbus-area rental companies rent chairs for as little as $1-2 each.

A simple arch or backdrop: Even something minimal — a wooden arch from a rental company or draped fabric between two trees — gives your ceremony a focal point and gives your photographer something beautiful to work with.

A tent or canopy: Ohio weather is unpredictable. Renting even a simple pop-up canopy gives you peace of mind and keeps your guests comfortable.

Portable restrooms: For larger backyard gatherings, this is worth the investment. Your guests will thank you.

The beauty of a backyard wedding is that it's already yours. You don't have to fight a venue's color palette or decor style. You bring the flowers, the string lights, the folding tables draped in linen — and it becomes exactly what you want it to be.

The Sunday Wedding Secret Nobody Talks About

Seriously — if your heart is set on a venue that's hard to book, consider a Sunday. Here's why:

Less competition. Most couples default to Saturday, which means Saturdays fill up first and are more competitive in lottery systems. Sunday dates often have more availability.

Lower alcohol costs. It sounds small but it adds up. Guests tend to drink significantly less at Sunday weddings because they have work the next day. If you're paying per drink or buying your own bar, this can save you hundreds of dollars.

A more intimate guest list naturally. Some guests simply can't make a Sunday wedding work — and that's actually a gentle, natural filter that leaves you with the people who really showed up for you.

Vendor availability. Your vendors — including your photographer — are often more available on Sundays, and some even offer Sunday pricing.

Your Intimate Wedding Deserves Beautiful Photos — Without the Full-Day Price Tag

Here's the thing about intimate weddings: you actually have fewer moments, which means each photo matters more. You want a photographer who knows how to work a smaller timeline, who understands how to capture genuine emotion in a more relaxed setting, and who won't make your 20-person ceremony feel like a production.

That's why I created the Essentials Collection — four hours of photography coverage, all your digital images, and the same care and attention I bring to every wedding I photograph.

Four hours is genuinely enough for:

Getting ready portraits, your ceremony, wedding party and family formals, and a beautiful golden hour portrait session with just the two of you.

Starting at $995, the Intimate Collection is designed specifically for elopements, micro weddings, backyard ceremonies, and park weddings. You get all your digital files delivered within 6-8 weeks — and if I'm ever late on that, you automatically receive a $100 print credit. No questions asked.

I've been photographing weddings in Columbus and Central Ohio since 2012. I've captured over 100 weddings across all kinds of venues, budgets, and circumstances — and I can tell you from experience that the smaller the wedding, the more room there is for real, unguarded moments. Those are my favorite photos to make.
