Hey friends,It’s Melchy here—welcome back! I know it’s been a minute, but between wedding season, editing marathons, and trying to be all the things (wife, mom, photographer, videographer... you get it), the podcast has taken a little pause. But I found a quiet moment in my closet studio, and I’m excited to talk about something that’s been popping up everywhere lately:

Blurry wedding photos.

Yep—intentional blur. It’s a trend that’s been building for a couple of years now, and I’ve got thoughts.

Two Kinds of Blur: Let’s Break It Down

As a wedding photographer, I’ve been seeing two types of blurry images floating around social media:

  1. The “Oops, it’s just blurry” photoThis one... I’m confused. Nothing’s in focus, and the image lacks direction or purpose. I know art is subjective, but as someone who values precision, this kind of blur just doesn’t land for me.

  2. The intentional, artistic blurNow this, I respect. It comes from styles like landscape photography—think creamy, milky waterfalls with everything else tack-sharp—or street photography where light trails blur across a nighttime cityscape. There’s technique involved, and the effect is purposeful.

In wedding photography, this style usually shows the couple in crisp focus while the bridal party walks past in a dreamy motion blur. It’s a cool nod to more editorial, storytelling vibes—and when done right, it’s absolutely beautiful.

Why This Style Takes Work

A quick reminder: creating intentional blur isn’t a happy accident—it requires the right gear and planning. To get that creamy, slow-shutter look, you need a tripod and a remote shutter. Even the act of pressing the camera can introduce motion and ruin the effect.

I’ve tried it before (shoutout to our hike at Hocking Hills), and trust me, I regretted not bringing the tripod. It’s one of those “do it right or don’t bother” techniques.

My Honest Take as a Wedding Photographer

Personally? I love sharp, detailed images. When I zoom in during editing and see every eyelash, every detail of a smile—that gives me the warm fuzzies. So when people ask me, “Can you do that blurry style?” my brain goes: “Wait, you want me to intentionally make it blurry?” 😂

But here’s the thing—I get it now. It’s a vibe. It tells a different kind of story, and as long as the blur is intentional and serves a creative purpose, I’m totally on board.

So… Do You Want Blurry Wedding Photos?

If dreamy motion blur is on your wedding photography wish list, let’s make it happen! I’d probably lean toward the style where you, the couple, stay in focus, while the bridal party moves around you to create that soft, romantic motion.

Just know:✔️ It takes planning✔️ It requires extra equipment✔️ You might need to hold that kiss for five seconds while trying not to laugh!

But I promise—it’ll be worth it.

Let’s Talk About Your Vision

Whether you're all about clean, crisp imagery or want to mix in a little intentional blur for that editorial edge, I’d love to bring your vision to life.
